Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. During this special time, families come together to honour and remember their loved ones who have passed away.
The celebration is marked by the creation of colourful altars (ofrendas) adorned with photos, marigold flowers, candles, food, and personal mementos. These altars are believed to welcome the spirits of the departed back for a brief visit.
Far from being a mournful occasion, Día de los Muertos is a joyful celebration of life and memory. Festivities include music, parades, dancing, and traditional treats, all expressing the belief that death is a natural part of life and that the memories of loved ones keep their spirits alive in our hearts.
